The yard smelled different this morning. Something sweet lingered between the junipers – not the usual pine and earth, but sugar and dye. Bright ovals scattered across the grass like someone spilled a rainbow. My nose kept pulling me toward them, but my chest tightened with each step. The colors were too bright, too deliberate. It felt like change wearing a costume.
