The humans have spent forty-seven minutes discussing whether to move the ottoman six inches to the left.
I have observed this conversation from three different positions on the sofa. The ottoman remains exactly where it was when the discussion began. No measurements have been taken. No one has actually moved it to see how it looks. They have simply talked about moving it while looking at it from the same angle.
Gus left the room after minute twelve. I stayed because I have learned that human conversations about furniture sometimes conclude with someone walking to the kitchen, and the kitchen is where the important decisions are made.
The ottoman, for its part, has maintained complete dignity throughout this process. It holds magazines and occasionally a mug. It asks for nothing more. Yet here we are, deep into the afternoon, still debating its optimal placement as if it were a monument requiring civic approval.
The light has shifted twice since this began. The ottoman’s shadow has moved more than the ottoman itself.
