“I feel things deeply. I just don’t rush about it.”

Dressed for the Occasion

The humans have been discussing something called Saint Patrick's Day, though I have yet to meet this Patrick fellow or understand why he merits such attention. There is talk of green things and parades, neither of which seem to involve cookies or car rides to the park.

I have observed that certain days carry weight in this household—the day the turkey appears, the morning when brightly wrapped boxes materialize beneath the indoor tree. These occasions follow patterns I have learned to recognize: increased activity in the kitchen, the good china emerging from its cabinet, voices pitched slightly higher with anticipation.

This Patrick day seems different. Less urgent. The conversations drift past me as I monitor the cookie jar from my position on the sofa. Something about wearing green, though I remain skeptical of clothing in general. My tricolor coat serves perfectly well, and the white blaze down my chest requires no seasonal adjustment.

Gus appears unbothered by the approaching festivities. He maintains his post near the kitchen counter, patient as stone, while I contemplate whether this Patrick person might have been a dog. The reverence suggests it, though the lack of treats in his honor argues against it.

Perhaps some saints simply prefer subtlety. I can respect that. The best celebrations, after all, are the ones that end with everyone exactly where they belong.
